Mind The Gap

The last two days we have been taking it relatively easy: going to church, doing some shopping and catching up with Shell & Graham. So today we decided it was time we actually did something touristy in London Town!

So far we have only been using the over land trains in zone 4 but today we experienced the underground London tubes. The tubes are efficient and seem to be readily available but I really think they make too much of the 'mind the gap' between the platform and the train, it really is a small gap! Brits are very over-catious!

We headed to the British Museum in Russell Square to enjoy the history of the world. It is a really great museum with some amazing exhibits including the Rosetta Stone and a few real mummies! Bron enjoyed the clock and watch section while Justin's favourite was the section on ancient Egypt. The museum is massive and after two hours we still hadn't seen everything. Might have to make another turn there later this month!

The museum was really busy and it was great to see many Brits amongst the tourists enjoying their own museums. The entry was for free which will help on the Rand budget! Apparently a lot of the museums are for free here.

Snow was predicted for today but so far none has fallen. It was sleeting slightly before entering the museum and we fantasised about a white world when we emerged later but there was no snow. As you can imagine it has been pretty chilly but we are amazed at what some people wear in this weather! Some of the girls take fashion way too seriously & I am surprised they don't suffer from frost bite!

After the museum it was time for a late lunch at The Hare & Tortoise, a Chinese restaurant close by. It was very nostalgic for Bron & Shell as this is the restaurant they discovered whilst on a Contiki tour of London in 2004. It was interesting to see how much we remembered and how the area had changed since then.

House- and Squire-sitting end tomorrow and tonight is our first night in Graham & Shell's cosy flat (they will join us tomorrow). Plans for tomorrow include more sight seeing in town! We want to head down to the river Thames and explore some of the arty galleries. Graham goes back to work tomorrow and Shell on Wednesday, blah. We head to Dublin on Wednesday evening for 5 days, yay!

Until next time...

  1. Hey cousins, welcome to grey London!!! We are so excited that you are here and are very much looking forward to seeing you SOON. I know you are in Dublin til the weekend though. Hope you are enjoying things so far. Unforunately you don't get over missing the sun very quickly - I am pining for it as I write! Mike and I would love to show you a couple more sites in London. Enjoy Dublin and get in touch soon. Love, Nicola.
