Marph Goes North

In July we had the privilege of travelling north of Perth for two weeks calling in at Kalbarri, Denham, Exmouth, and the Geraldton - Dongara area.
We covered ~4000 km but still only touched on a small part of WA!
And of course our mellow yellow travel fellow came along for the ride =)

The first stop was Kalbarri with its gorgeous National Park and wildflowers.

Natural Bridge in Kalbarri NP.

Hanging out with a Murchison Rose.

What goes into getting the best photo!

Gorgeous red layered rocks and secluded beach at Eagle Gorge.

Our resident photographer doing what he does best.
Sunset at Kalbarri Beach.

We planned to do some hiking in the main part of the park but the roads were closed due to heavy rainfall so we settle for a walk on the blustery and desolate scrubby coastal cliff tops instead.

Enjoying the impromptu coastal cliff top walk in Kalbarri NP.

Lunch with the locals.
This little guy was really chilled and happy to carry on munching and hopping about looking for the best leaves while we walked with and watched him.

One of the less glamorous parts of the holiday, the Oz Bush Loo!

These people are serious about poo!

Sunset at Blue Holes Fish Habitat Protection Area.

Enjoying the pelican feeding on our last morning in Kalbarri.

The road into the NP was open on the day we left Kalbarri so we were able to stop in and see the main viewpoints such as this spectacular and aptly named Nature's Window.

Hanging out with the flowers at Nature's Window.

Sometimes we felt like we were nerens!
(Nerens is Afrikaans for nowhere)

A quick stop at Hamelin Bay on the way from Kalbarri to Denham to see the 2000 year old stromatolites.

One of the attractions of Denham are the dolphins and dugongs at nearby Monkey Mia. We skipped off early on the first morning to watch the (highly regulated) feeding of the wild dolphins in the shallows. Unfortunately we didn't see any dugongs.

Dolphin watching was followed by a long walk through the bushland and on the beach on a truly beautiful day.

Enjoying a long walk on Shell Beach on a somewhat less glorious day.

From Denham we travelled to Exmouth and passed the latitude line Tropic of Capricorn on the way.

Welcome to Exmouth! Home of the Ningaloo Reef.

One of the main attractions in Exmouth is the seasonal migration of the whale sharks, the worlds largest fish. A definite holiday highlight was a whale shark swim tour. It was amazing!! Details and photos to follow in the next post coming soon!

Exmouth is also home of the Cape Range National Park.
Exploring the eastern part of the park full of gorgeous gorges on a rainy day.

More walks at Yardie Creek on a better weather day!

Australians are really serious about their warming signs!

A favourite activity at Exmouth was snorkelling the Ningaloo Reef, one of the world's longest fringing coral reefs.

Enjoying the sunset at Vlamingh Head Lighthouse after a long day walking in the sun, swimming and snorkelling.

Emus!
We only saw 2 emus in the park but apparently there are loads of emus in the area and they can often be seen wandering around town.

Termite mound!
There are hundreds of these on the road into Exmouth.

And then it was time to head back to Perth. Insert sad face here =(
But first there was a day searching for wildflowers!

Looking for wildflowers!

The special Wreath Flower that only grows in a few spots in WA.

Another good spot for wild flower spotting is Coalseam Park.

After a night each in Geraldton and Dongara with a day of wild flowers inbetween, it was time for the last leg of the journey home.

The last stop on the way home, the Pinnacles at Nambung National Park.

What a wonderful, different and restful break!

See you next time for more of our holiday up north!
